I'm Dreaming of a New Church Building

How do you begin to imagine a new church building? As MPLC started dreaming about the next church building God would have them build, the Council tasked committees to list building-related ministry needs from their different perspectives. These were compiled in a report shared with the congregation in October 1973, before the congregational vote to move forward with a building program.

Worship and Music suggested that “the church should be conducive to building community among the persons who gather within it to worship and work to the glory of God….The church should present a warm and soft atmosphere of welcome by our Lord.” They also detailed specific “wish list” traits for the church narthex (entrance area), nave (center), choir and music, chancel (altar/front) and sanctuary (worship space).
Christian Education requested 14 classrooms, a dedicated library space, education office and storage space. Fellowship and Recreation sought a large parish hall and kitchen, large lounge with fireplace, and a dedicated nursery. Administration and Facilities recommended specifics on office and janitor needs, and asked that doorways and passageways would be made wide enough for wheelchair access.
All of their considerations were shared with potential architects who might design our future church building. They worked to incorporate as many of their suggestions as possible in the new church plans.
